Ford Takes the Lead with American-Made EVs, Putting U.S. Drivers First

Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park Michigan factory is the groundwork for a new age of electric vehicle (EV) production that’s proudly American, community-driven, and tailored to meet the real needs of EV owners.

With the growing demand for EVs, BlueOval Battery Park’s mission is clear to make lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries right here in the U.S. This approach means more affordable EVs, less reliance on imports, and, ultimately, the potential for every driver to own a sustainable vehicle powered by American-made energy.

With new support from Michigan’s Economic Development Corporation, Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall is moving full steam ahead to complete its massive 1.8-million-square-foot facility by 2026, creating over 1,700 jobs along the way.

New EV Tax Rules Favor American-Made Batteries

This project addresses a much bigger challenge. Recent changes to federal EV tax credit rules could boost U.S.-made batteries, but there’s a catch. Not every EV buyer gets the same benefit. The new rules give priority to vehicles with batteries made here in the U.S. or in free-trade partner countries. This shift directly benefits plants like BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, where locally produced batteries will soon power models like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning.

Lisa Drake, Ford’s VP of EV programs, highlighted this commitment, stating, “BlueOval Battery Park Michigan will play an important role in our plan to help make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable by producing low-cost LFP batteries in the U.S. and not relying on imports.”

Drake’s words capture Ford’s vision to make EVs affordable by meeting tax credit requirements, giving Americans every reason to choose a domestically made EV over a pricey import.

Community and Environmental Responsibility

But Ford’s not just building a battery plant. They’re building a partnership with the community in Calhoun County. So far, Ford has invested nearly $450,000 in local projects, supporting landmarks like Brooks Memorial Fountain and the Bohm Theatre. And they’re in it for the long haul.

Ford has protected 245 acres along the Kalamazoo River as a conservation area, keeping it safe from future industrial development. It’s a promise to balance growth with respect for the local environment.

“Ford is committed to being a great neighbor,” said Gabby Bruno, Ford’s Community Relations Director, “and that means we will continue learning and supporting the causes most valued by the community.”

Ford’s focus on environmental care creates a lasting impact. Today, where fast-paced industrial growth often harms natural landscapes, Ford is taking a different path. By investing in stormwater management systems and advanced air filtration, they’re showing a genuine commitment to protecting Michigan’s environment.

These systems are designed to keep the air clean, reduce water runoff, and maintain the natural beauty of the surrounding areas. Ford is proving that even large industrial projects can coexist with and respect the land they’re built on.

Job Creation and Economic Resilience

Ford’s work in Michigan is part of their Ford+ strategy to revitalize American manufacturing and bring well-paying jobs back to the heart of the country. BlueOval Battery Park alone is set to create or secure over 5,000 jobs across Michigan, with thousands already added since 2022.
