- The 2024 Hyundai Kona will have both an electric variant and two gas-powered versions.
- The Kona’s interior design focus is on roominess and comfort.
- Special tech in the electric version includes an i-PEDAL driving mode and a Smart Regenerative System.
Hyundai made a splash at the 2023 New York International Auto Show when it revealed the 2024 Hyundai Kona. The newest Kona has a wide range of powertrains (including electric), a rugged and dynamic design, and plenty of innovative technologies.
First, there’s the Hyundai Kona Electric, which gets up to 260 miles of range. But for the ICE fans, the Kona will also offer gas-powered options in the Limited and N Line models.
“The all-new Kona and Kona Electric continue to build upon our extremely successful first-generation model, with outstanding efficiency, innovative technologies, distinctive styling, and comprehensive safety features,” said José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America. “The new Kona Electric represents the next step forward in eco-friendly mobility solutions, a key model in Hyundai’s rapid transition to clean mobility and progress for humanity.”
2024 Hyundai Kona Exterior Design
The Hyundai Kona Electric was the base for designing the other models in the 2024 line. A bit unconventionally, the carmaker developed the new Kona platform with the electrified powertrain first – an EV-to-ICE development process. This creates an overall aesthetic of futurism that blends sleekness and ruggedness into one cohesive whole. This approach is a part of the entire Kona line.
In addition, the new Kona Electric has a drag coefficient of just 0.27, making it supremely aerodynamic. The nose design, rear liftgate, sculpted wheel arch armor, and parametric surfaces give it some great character. Meanwhile, the exterior color options are bold enough to appeal to a wide variety of drivers.
2024 Hyundai Kona Interior Design
Hyundai has designed a roomier interior for the Kona to cater to a wide range of people’s lifestyles. The front row is very driver-centric. It features a floating horizontal C-Pad with dual 12.3-inch panoramic display screens that add to the car’s high-tech feel. In addition, the shift-by-wire gear selector is now located behind the steering wheel, creating more storage space in the console area.
The interior is even more spacious thanks to slimmer front seats. This allows for more rear legroom and a curveless bench seat in the second row. The rear seat can still recline, of course. However, that second-row seat can fully fold down to provide 63.7 cubic feet or cargo space with the seat backs folded down. To top it off, ambient interior lighting options are available that correspond to drive modes, acceleration, or to suit the driver’s mood.
2024 Hyundai Kona Electric Features
Now, let’s be real – we’re here for the EV. A neat detail on the Kona Electric is that it comes with battery preconditioning, which allows for better charging and power performance in colder ambient temperatures. Plus, a new charging port door lamp helps with night visibility.
It comes with “frunk” storage, active grille shutters, and an exterior Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability. This bi-directional onboard charger can power devices, or it can charge up other electrical equipment, like camping gear, e-bikes, scooters, or even some appliances if you’re stuck in a power outage. Your gear and appliances can be plugged in using an available V2L adapter when the car is in park.
What’s more, the Kona Electric has an i-PEDAL driving mode that enables one-pedal driving. This means you can accelerate, decelerate, and stop using only the accelerator pedal when you want to. And if that’s not smart enough for you, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric comes with a Smart Regenerative System. It adjusts the levels of regenerative braking based on real-time data from forward traffic flow, giving you optimized efficiency with your regenerative braking.
The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric comes with two battery options. First, there’s the 48.6 kWh battery, which offers 2WD, a power output of 99 kW, and 199 lb. ft. of torque. The other option is a 64.8 kWh battery, which ups the power to 159 kW but keeps the same torque. The car can charge from 10% to 80% in about 43 minutes on a fast charger.
2024 Hyundai Kona Availability
It appears that the gas-powered Konas will show up at dealerships this summer; meanwhile, the Kona Electric will become available in the late fall. Unfortunately, we don’t know the price yet, but some sources like KBB estimate it might be in the $35,00 range.
