Luna Cycle is launching an electric motorcycle called the Talaria Sting R MX4. The new bike goes head-to-head with the popular Sur-Ron X, in a wave of similar-style small e-motos. Other competitors in the space include Segway and Rawrr. Interestingly, if you could not see the logos, you would have trouble telling the Talaria apart from any of the others — visually speaking, anyway.
Where the Talaria Sting R MX4 differs is that it has 50% more power than a stock Sur-Ron. Sur-Ron owners are notorious for modding their bikes to make them more powerful, sometimes spending as much money on the mods as they do on the bike. The Sur-Ron’s 4.8 hp output pales compared to the 7.39 peak hp (tested on Luna’s dyno). There’s an electronic speed limiter built in, but apparently, with a pair of wire snippers, you can unlock that and go up to 56 mph.
The Talaria Sting also offers 18% more range with its 20% higher capacity battery. It has a gearbox, so it does require an oil change every 3,000 miles.
Luna Cycle started carrying Sur-Ron years ago, and they saw that their customers were modifying the bikes, including beefier brakes. Their answer was the Talaria, offering 230mm rotors as stock, as well as four levels of regenerative braking.
Price for this Talaria e-moto is $4500, slightly higher than the Sur-Ron at $4350, but you get significantly more performance for $150.
Follow the Law
Even with the headlight, Talaria bikes do not have turn signals or other features to make them street legal. At the speeds they can achieve, they’d have to be registered as a motorcycle and have turn signals, brake lights and other features to do so. They’re only legal where dirt bikes are legal, like motorcycle trails, private land and OHV trails.
