Surprising absolutely no one, the best F-series truck, sporty Mustang, and low-cost cargo van Ford offers are in huge demand.
Even with ongoing supply chain issues, Ford’s EV sales through Q3 tripled from 2021, gaining a 3.1% market share and helping along the automaker’s goal of a 600,000 run rate by the end of 2023. This is even despite overall sales declining nearly 9% from September 2021.
Interesting details about this phenomenon include the fact that Ford saw a significant decline (18.3%) in truck sales, which has previously been the brand’s best-selling segment. But within that segment, the F-150 Lightning has sold 8,760 units since its launch in June 2022.
There’s also the Mustang Mach-E, which continues to see high demand even though it’s been on the market for nearly three years. Ford sold 2,324 units in September 2022, which marks a 47% increase from the previous year.
The Ford EV with the highest demand, though, is the E-Transit van, which dominates its market with over 90% share. It was the best-selling electric van through September, with 4,387 being sold since its release earlier this year.
The demand is clearly there, so Ford has its work cut out for it if the brand wants to hit a 600,000 run rate by the end of 2023. Back in July, the automaker reported it had secured 60 GWh of battery supply to meet that target run rate and confirmed a move to using iron-phosphate (LFP) cells to reduce reliance on scarce minerals like nickel.
