Tesla Semi Production Starts, Deliveries In December

Tesla Semi electric freight trucks

After years of waiting, Tesla Semi production has finally begun, according to Elon Musk – and Pepsi will get the first shipment in December.

The Tesla Semi was first unveiled alongside the new Roadster back in 2017, with Elon stating production would begin in 2019. Well five years later (and three years late) Tesla Semi production is actually beginning. The 500-mile tractor will begin deliveries in December, and Pepsi is the first customer to get their hands on them – though Walmart, FedEx, and UPS are all said to be awaiting their own deliveries as well.

Though the first Tesla Semi trucks will be built near the Nevada Gigafactory, full-scale production will apparently take place out of the newer Augstin Gigafactory. With a towing capacity of 80,000 lbs and a 0-60 MPH speed of 20 seconds, the Semi is “fun to drive” according to Musk, though its entry to the electric hauler market comes at a time of increased competition from the likes of Mercedes-Benz, among others.

Pricing for the 500-mile Tesla Semi is pegged at $180,000, while a 300-mile version will sell for about $150,000.
