Porsche Cayenne Electric Brings Wireless Charging to Your Garage and It Looks Unreal

You’ve probably heard about wireless charging for phones. No plugging in. Just set it down, energy appears like magic. I use one everyday! Now, Porsche is inviting us to expect that same laid-back vibe with an electric SUV.

The idea of charging your car by simply parking is almost dreamlike, yet it’s very real and coming soon. Porsche will offer an 11 kW inductive charging system. No more wallboxes or plug fuss. Just a slim “one-box” base plate that handles everything. That means home charging feels as simple as dropping your phone on a cradle.

So how does one park and charge? The Cayenne Electric will automatically lower its ride height for ideal alignment over the plate. Graphics in the My Porsche app’s Surround View assist guide you right into place. Once the parking brake goes on, charging kicks in without further action. You keep your hands free for coffee.

“Ease of use, suitability for everyday use and charging infrastructure are still the decisive factors when it comes to the acceptance of electric mobility,” said Dr Michael Steiner, Porsche’s R&D board member. He added that wireless charging “will soon be available in series production at Porsche. Charging an electric car at home has never been so easy and convenient.”

In terms of performance, Porsche’s contactless system matches wired AC charging, reaching 11 kW at roughly 90% efficiency, nearly identical to a Level 2 plug-in.

Most EV drivers handle charging at home, and for Porsche owners that number reaches roughly 75%, which makes the timing logical.

The floor plate weighs around 50 kilograms and measures roughly 117 x 78 x 6 centimeters. It can be installed in a garage or driveway, and Porsche offers professional installation through its electrician service. All electrical components are sealed to protect against rain and snow, TÜV Süd has tested the system, and it carries both CE and UL certifications. The plate can be used indoors or outdoors, and even driving over it will not cause serious damage.

And if you’re worried about safety, Porsche covered that. The system pauses charging if a pet, child, or tool slips underneath. And if a stray metal object starts to heat up, the foreign-object detection immediately cuts the power.

Ultra-wideband technology helps the car pinpoint its position over the floor plate, essentially giving the Cayenne its own version of smart parking.

Inductive charging has been used for years in devices like electric toothbrushes and phones, though typically at slow speeds or in trial projects. Porsche is the first automaker to bring an 11 kW version into a production vehicle, matching the pace of wired AC charging and proving its everyday usefulness.

On display at IAA Mobility in Munich (September 9-14, 2025), the fluorescent-painted prototype is catching eyes with its complex finish. Five vivid color layers sit on top of more than 25 ultra-thin coatings, sealed under 100 liters of clear varnish. Add over 30 sanding cycles, and the result feels less like paintwork and more like rolling artwork.

The Cayenne Electric’s world debut is slated for late 2025. European buyers can order the wireless option then. The floor plate goes on sale across Porsche Centres and online in 2026; other markets follow later.

Researchers established the SAE J2954 standard for wireless EV charging, and Porsche’s system falls under the “WPT 3” category, offering up to 11 kW at roughly 85% efficiency. Porsche has managed to push that figure to 90%, putting its performance nearly on par with traditional wired charging.

You park, the Cayenne Electric lowers itself, and the floor plate transfers energy through the air until the battery is topped up. No cables, no fuss. It might sound ordinary, yet it completely changes how home charging feels.
