Why There Is A Mad Dash Right Now To Buy an EV: Tax Credits, Test Drives, and Big Wins

  • $7500 EV tax credit is sunsetting at the end of Sept. The race to buy an EV has started for shoppers.
  • States may issue their own individual EV tax credits thereby still giving shoppers what they need.
  • EV sales to spike through Sept. For Q4, finding in-market shoppers ready to test drive will be critical.

Looking for the right moment to go electric? This is it.

Between now and September 30, 2025, buyers can still claim up to $7,500 off a new electric vehicle and up to $4,000 off a used one thanks to the federal tax credit.

After that date, the opportunity disappears, cut short by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R.1), which President Trump signed into law on July 4.

The Inflation Reduction Act originally gave buyers until 2032 to claim these benefits, and while the deadline has moved up, the available incentives haven’t changed yet. The full amount is still on the table through the end of Q3. That means there’s still time to save thousands, and drive away in something you love.

Beginning Oct. 1, watch for states like Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Texas, and Washington who may potentially offer their own state-funded electric vehicle rebates.

Another benefit is that your savings might not end with the federal credit. States such as Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Texas, and Washington are still offering their own electric vehicle rebates.

In many cases, these state-level incentives can be combined with the federal tax credit. This combination could put several thousand dollars back in your pocket at a time when every bit counts.

According to Reuters, a Barclays analyst reported that demand is rising quickly as more buyers act now to lock in the federal tax credit before it ends. It’s a financially sound decision, and a timely one.

Research from Harvard indicates that ending the credit could lower EV sales by up to six percentage points by 2030. That makes this summer a unique window for value, access, and smart decision-making.

Even better, you currently have a strong range of options to choose from.

Right now, automakers like Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Jeep, Kia, and Tesla have models that still qualify for the credit. These vehicles meet both the pricing and final assembly requirements under current law.

Here’s a list of vehicles you can still buy in 2025 and qualify for the federal tax credit:

And if you’re wondering how to test-drive before you commit, Electrify Expo is your go-to.

Three Electrify Expo events are taking place this summer. The first will be in Redmond (Seattle), Washington on July 12 and 13, the second will be in Alameda (San Francisco), California on August 23 and 24, and the third will be in Hoffman Estates (Chicago), Illinois on September 13 and 14. These events go far beyond traditional trade booths.

Attendees will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel, experience the acceleration, test regenerative braking, and speak directly with brand representatives.

The demo areas will feature hybrids, plug-in hybrids, fully electric vehicles, and electric bikes, scooters, skateboards and much more.

Brands are bringing real vehicles for hands-on experiences, including the Lucid Gravity, Kia EV9, Lexus RX 450h+, Porsche Taycan, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Ford F-150 Lightning, Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota Camry, Tesla Cybertruck, and others.

If you want to avoid waiting in long lines, you can purchase a Power Pack pass, which gives you early access and quicker entry to the test drive areas.

And with Q3 seeing a spike in buyer interest, now is also the easiest time to find a wide range of vehicles still in stock. Waiting until October or later could leave you browsing limited inventory or watching prices climb without the cushion of a tax credit.

So what should you do?

  • Lock in a test drive at Electrify Expo
  • Check your state’s rebate programs
  • Act before September 30 to qualify for full savings

You don’t need to wait for better timing. It’s already here. The cars are ready. The credits are still live. And the test-drive opportunities are literally pulling up to your city.
