Wiesmann Launches $288K Electric Sportscar

After a wild financial ride, German automaker Wiesmann has reappeared with a new retro-styled electric roadster, dubbed Project Thunderball.

It definitely looks like a roadster that Sean Connery’s James Bond would drive around exotic locales in. But under the hood, it’s more like something Q would have cooked up. It contains two rear-mounted electric motors that offer up 670 total horsepower. With power like that, Wiesmann claims that Project Thunderball will be able to hit 62 mph in 2.9 seconds. They also say that the maximum range would be 300 miles, and that the 800 V electrical architecture can charge “extremely fast with up to 300kW DC fast charging” at a public Level 3 charger.

The interior craftsmanship is quite lovely, with all of the leather and carbon fiber throughout the cabin. Each model of Project Thunderball will be crafted at Weismann’s Gecko facility in Germany.

We don’t know if this will ever come to the U.S., but if you have a second home in Germany and want this retro roadster, be ready to drop €3,000 (about $2,900) for a reservation. But the company says that, even despite the steep price tag just to get on the reservation list, plenty of people have gotten in line. “Project Thunderball is the car that will bring Wiesmann into the new electrified era. Since revealing the car in April, we have seen an overwhelming response from potential customers,” said owner and CEO Roheen Berry.
