We don’t write many articles about Subaru because they don’t have many EVs— now, the few they do have are getting a recall.
The Subaru Solterra and its awkwardly-named sibling, the Toyota bZ4X, are part of a voluntary safety recall issued by Toyota. And why, you may ask, is Toyota issuing an international recall of its first mass-produced EV? This one’s a little less complicated than other recalls out there, however: the wheels are falling off.
It’s not all bad news for fans of Toyota and Subaru EVs, however. They’re saying that the wheel issue impacts just 2,700 vehicles, with 2,200 of the affected vehicles having been earmarked for Europe, 260 for the United States, 10 for Canada, and 110 for Japan, the company said, adding quickly that none of the Japanese-market vehicle affected were slated to reach customers (they were meant for test drives and display).
“We sincerely apologise [sic] for any inconvenience this causes you,” Toyota said on its website. “We would have repaired it as soon as possible, but we are investigating the details.”
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has some different numbers for the recall, citing 661 Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra units involved in the said recall (presumably 260 Toyotas, 401 Subarus), all manufactured between March 30 and June 3 for the Solterra. Affected owners will be notified through various channels, including email, phone calls, and mail, advising them against driving the vehicles until the recall repairs can be completed.
