NIO and Shell Partner on Battery Swap

SHELL AND NIO COLLABORATE TO IMPROVE CHARGING EXPERIENCE FOR EV DRIVERS

After months of planning, NIO and Shell have taken the wraps off of their first co-branded EV battery swap station in China.

Chinese electric carmaker NIO signed an agreement with energy giant Shell to collaborate on charging and battery swap stations throughout China and Europe. Earlier this month, the pair launched their first co-branded NIO-Shell charging and swap stations in China.

Located in Xiamen, Fujian located in the country’s Southeast, the new Xiamen Tongan Shell Station comes equipped with a second-generation battery swap unit and two 180 kW supercharging piles.

This means that NIO, as we type this, now has 1,048 swap stations in China – in addition to nearly 1,800 publicly available charging stations. It also has now completed more than 4,000,000 successful EV battery swaps worldwide.

Both Shell and NIO have agreed to collaborate on the promotion, construction, and operation of these facilities, and they’ve also jointly promised to build 100 swapping stations by 2025. An extra bonus is that any charging facilities owned by Shell will be open to NIO drivers across Europe.

NIO has also announced its expansion plans to open its first plant outside of China this September. The new battery and car factory will be located in Pest, Hungary, to better supply the European market. The first European-built NIO models should reach customers sometime in Q4.
