Ultralight Sydney Kicks Up the Gravel

The purists demanded an ultralight road and gravel e-bike that didn’t feel like a cheater – and the Sydney might just be it!

Spotted at last week’s Eurobike 2022 in Frankfurt, the Heidelberg-based e-bike manufacturer Coboc took the opportunity to launch an urban sport bike dubbed the Sydney. At just 14.5 kg (about 31 pounds), its slim design helps make this one of the lightest e-bike models to take around town.

The minimalist looks of the Sydney are helped by the internal cable routing. It has a step-over aluminum frame and a tapered top bar that’s available in four sizes to better fit a range of rider heights, from 1.58 meters to 2 meters (5′ 2″ up to 6′ 6 “). Meanwhile, the riser handlebar gives it a more easy-riding, upright posture.

Like many diamond-frame e-bikes, the Sydney is designed for both road and gravel, with a 250 W rear-mounted hub motor that puts 500 watts of peak output good for a pedal-assisted top speed of 25 km/h (15.5 mph), which makes this exactly the kind of e-bike that should appeal to the cycling purists – the motor is an assist, good for steep hills or cramped and tired rides home. It doesn’t replace the quads.

In that spirit, the 11-speed SRAM NX derailleur gives the rider plenty of resistance options, too. The rims are 28 inches with Schwalbe G-One Allround tires, and the saddle is a sporty-feeling Selle San Marco Monza. Another nice touch is the SP Connect smartphone holder on the headset cap.

As for safety, the Sydney comes with hydraulic disc brakes with 160 mm rotors, an integrated headlight, and an LED taillight for visibility.

The frame-integrated, 380 Wh Li-ion battery is estimated to last for 78-110 km (47-83 miles) in a single charge, and takes just 2.5 hours to top up from 0.
