Uber Bike Share Expands to Latin America

  • Uber has partnered with Brazilian bike-sharing company Tembici to offer riders electric and regular bikes via its app.
  • The program will initially launch in major Brazilian cities but should easily expand into Chile, Argentina, and Colombia.
  • Tembici is a smart partner, as they are the largest bike-sharing operator in Latin America.

Uber is pedaling toward a greener future in Latin America with a new partnership. The ride-hailing giant has joined forces with Brazilian bike-sharing company Tembici to offer riders access to electric and regular bicycles through its app. This expansion of the Uber bike share service will allow for greater adoption of e-mobility in dense cities and potentially cut down on carbon emissions in those cities.

Where Will the Uber Bike Share Be Available?

The program will initially launch in Recife, Brazil, but it will later expand to other major cities like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Brasília. Tembici has a presence in various Brazilian cities, as well as Santiago, Chile; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Bogotá, Colombia; thanks to this, the Uber bike share program can easily expand outside of Brazil.

About Tembici

Tembici says it is the largest bike-sharing operator in Latin America. Their reign extends not only in terms of trips volume but also in the number of systems and bikes available. This includes the inclusion of 2,500 bikes from the iFood Pedal program, a successful partnership with iFood, Brazil’s leading food delivery app. In total, the region boasts a fleet of over 45,500 shared bikes, with Tembici contributing 18,800 of them to the mix.

The bike-sharing firm has garnered financial support from organizations like International Finance Corp, Valor Capital Group, Redpoint, and Crescera Capital.

Tembici’s expansion plans are on a roll, fueled by a 160 million-real ($31.4 million) loan from Brazil’s state development bank. The brand’s aim is to have 30,000 bicycles on Latin American streets by the end of 2023, with a third of them being electric.

Looking to the Future

Annie Duvnjak, Uber’s global micromobility general manager, emphasized the significance of this partnership in achieving Uber’s environmental goals. “This partnership underscores the important role that car-free options are increasingly playing in Uber’s strategy to achieve zero carbon emissions.”

Although Uber has not provided a specific date for when Tembici and Itau bike docking stations will appear on its app, users can expect this exciting addition in the near future.

This could be a good move for Uber. Though the brand has said they had a very strong Q4, their shares still slipped a bit. Hopefully they can still make good on their pledge to use only electric vehicles by 2030.
