Huawei Takes 60,000 Orders for Aito EV

Huawei-backed Aito sees 10,000 pre-orders in 2 hours for the new M7 model

Chinese telecoms firm Huawei is backing the all-new Aito M7 electric SUV, and people are lining up to buy one!

Back by Chinese tech giants Huawei, the Aito electric vehicle brand put up its M7 model SUV for pre-order last week, and was rewarded with more than 60,000 pre-orders in less than seventy-two hours. (!) Deposits cost 1,000 yuan (just under $149).

The M7 is Aito’s second production vehicle, and also the second that features Huawei’s HarmonyOS operating system for vehicles inside. The company’s OS allows drivers to access all of the mobile services from Huawei’s app store, and allows Huawei device owners to connect to their car more seamlessly than Android Auto or Apple CarPlay currently allows – stuff like a built-in camera with 3D face recognition for anti-theft security and in-vehicle face payment.

The amount of pre-orders shows people’s enthusiasm for the Chinese luxury SUV, showing that Huawei could be a major disruptor of the existing car manufacturing industry. Experts believe the M7 could be a direct competitor against the Li One, a popular large PHEV from fellow Chinese automaker Li Auto, and the more established brands like NIO and BYD.

The six-seat M7 has a four-cylinder, 1.5-liter engine with a 40.6 kWh battery. It can go as far as 1,220 kilometers (758 miles) on a full tank and a 100% battery charge. It gets a little over 39 miles per gallon, a better mpg rating than Li Auto’s L9 SUV and the BMW X7.

According to state media outlet Shanghai Securities News, Aito has the potential to sell up to 100,000 units this year. It has already delivered more than 18,000 vehicles in just four months, after deliveries began back in March.
